XS Horizon is a watch for ZIIIRO, makers of unique timepieces.
With a focus on creating a smaller unisex size, this watch offers a unique perspective on the perception of time. The passing of time is represented as a flowing sequence of events, where a clear line denotes the present moment and separates the past from the future. The further back in time, the more the color fades into obscurity, while darkness symbolizes the unknown future ahead.
Project technology
Customer feedback over the years revealed a demand for a smaller watch. I opted to create a watch that is not specifically designed for a particular gender, but rather for individuals who prefer smaller casings. As a result, a new model was created, which is only three quarters the size of most existing models, but maintains the popular shape and style with a more refined appearance. To create this new design, I had to experiment with printing synthetic discs to serve as watch hands. Finding the right Pantone color hues and the correct order of printing layers and color opacities was crucial to ensure that both gradients are readable at every alignment to each other. The new watch face concept slightly resembles one of the existing models, but operates differently technically. The watch dial is housed in a small 316L stainless steel casing with a diameter of only 31mm. It features two interlocking gradients that serve as hour and minute hands and can be distinguished by a line marking the minute hand.
Specifications
The XS features a 316L stainless steel casing with a matte finish, available in Rose Gold or Black options with PVD color. The casing is 9.7mm thick and 31mm wide, with a twist-lock, matte-finished 316L stainless steel case back. The watch face consists of a solid gradient hour disc and a transparent gradient minute disc. The dial is hidden and the crown is located at the 3 o’clock position. The Milanese mesh strap is 16mm wide and comes with a tool-free quick change mechanism. The watch is powered by a Japanese Miyota 2026 quartz movement and has a hardened mineral crystal glass. The battery, SR 626 SW, lasts approximately 2 years, and the watch is water-resistant up to 5 ATM.
